Monte Olivia is the mountain that defines Ushuaia's skyline. At 1,326 meters, it is the highest of those surrounding the city, and its sharp silhouette is visible from any point in the bay.
The name comes from the Yámana word Uliwai, after its silhouette against the sky. It is one of the few place names from the canoe people of the Beagle Channel that survived on the map. The Salesian priest Alberto María de Agostini was the first to summit it, in 1913.
But there is something more concrete: the Olivia river valley is the overland gateway to Ushuaia. Anyone arriving from Río Grande by Route 3 descends through this valley to reach the city. The name anchors us in something physically present on every transfer: the mountain you see, the valley you cross, the Yámana word that survived at the edge of the map.
